Piercings are no longer just jewelry or a fashion statement—they can also have a positive impact on your well-being. We’re hearing more and more about so-called acupuncture piercings, which target specific points in the ear and are based on the principles of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM).

Wellness with a needle? Whether it’s a Shenmen piercing, a migraine piercing, or the so-called allergy piercing—these piercings might be more than just a cosmetic enhancement.

At StudioGlanz & Stichin Zurich,Furat—an experienced piercer and studio owner—offers exactly these kinds of specialized piercings, combining extensive expertise, a delicate touch, and a holistic approach to you and your body.

What is the science behind acupuncture piercings?

The idea comes from traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), specifically from ear acupuncture (auriculotherapy). Certain points in the ear are connected to various organs or bodily functions. According to this practice, stimulating these points—whether with acupuncture needles or permanently through piercings—can help promote your physical and mental well-being.

Here are a few examples

  • Shen-Men Piercing
The Shen-Men point is considered the “Gate of the Mind” and is said to help reduce stress, alleviate anxiety, and promote inner peace. This point may be particularly beneficial for people with sleep problems or inner restlessness.
  • Migraine Piercing
This piercing is located on the inner part of the ear and targets an acupuncture point associated with migraine symptoms.
  • Allergy Piercing
For hay fever or house dust allergies, a specific point in the ear can be stimulated through a piercing.

Reality or wishful thinking?

One thing is clear: acupuncture piercings are not a substitute for medical treatment. However, many people report feeling noticeably better after the procedure—whether through fewer migraine attacks, improved sleep quality, or reduced allergy symptoms.

Interview with Furat of Glanz & Stich, Zurich

Hi Furat, how did you come across the topic of acupuncture piercings?

I’ve been working as a piercer for over 16 years—and for me, piercing has always been more than just an aesthetic detail. I’ve been particularly interested in how closely the body, mind, and emotional health are interconnected.

When I first came across ear acupuncture—a practice rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine—a few years ago, a whole new world opened up to me. I was immediately fascinated by the idea that specific points in the ear could have a direct impact on our well-being. I pursued extensive training, had many conversations with experts, and began to integrate this knowledge into my work in a practical way.

What effects are attributed to these piercings—and what experiences have you had with them in your studio through your clients?

The feedback I receive from my clients is often very touching. Many report a noticeable improvement in chronic migraines, headaches, panic attacks, anxiety, sleep disorders, depression, muscle tension, and even allergies such as hay fever.

Some people even say that their daily lives have changed dramatically. Of course, I’m not promising anyone a cure—but I can see that these piercings can really help many people feel better and regain a sense of control over their well-being.

Are there certain parts of the ear that are particularly popular?

Yes, definitely. The Shen Men piercing is particularly popular because it can specifically target stress, sleep problems, emotional distress, and panic attacks. Many people come to me specifically for that reason. The migraine piercing is also in high demand—especially among people with chronic conditions or regular headaches. The allergy piercing is particularly popular in the spring. Which points we use always depends on the individual situation—every ear, every person is unique.

Regarding specific types of piercings:

What exactly does a Shen Men piercing do—and who would you recommend it to?

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Shenmen point is known as the "Gate of the Spirit." It can help alleviate emotional stress, improve sleep, and promote inner peace.

I especially recommend it to people who suffer from panic attacks, chronic anxiety, sleep problems, or depression. Panic attacks, in particular, are unfortunately very common these days—I see many people who come to me for exactly that reason.

This issue is also very close to my heart personally, because I know firsthand how difficult these situations can be. That makes it all the more wonderful to see how a small piercing can make a real difference.

What has been your clients' experience with the migraine piercing?

Many people report feeling significant relief—especially from chronic migraines and severe headaches. I have clients who have struggled with migraine attacks for years, sometimes decades, and who, after getting a piercing, have experienced months or even years without symptoms for the first time in a long while.

In some cases, I work closely with doctors and neurologists to provide targeted support throughout the treatment process. The goal is not to replace conventional medical treatments, but to offer an effective complement to them—in a gentle, body-oriented way.

How does allergy piercing work—and what do you need to keep in mind?

This piercing is placed at a point in the ear that is connected to the immune system and the respiratory tract. People with hay fever or dust allergies, in particular, often report significant relief from their symptoms.

As with all piercings, proper care is essential: hygiene, patience, and consistent aftercare. The results usually aren’t immediate but become apparent over the course of several weeks.

About the process and consultations at the studio:

How do you approach a consultation for an acupuncture piercing?

I make a point of taking time for each person. The first session is all about listening carefully: What’s weighing on you? What symptoms are you experiencing? What are your hopes and goals?

Then I’ll clearly explain what’s possible—and what isn’t. Together, we’ll find the approach that’s truly right for you. My consultations are always personalized, sensitive, and conducted on an equal footing.

How flexible is the placement—or are there fixed points?

There are standard points in TCM, but I combine this knowledge with my experience as a piercer. Every ear is different—which is why I pay close attention to the anatomy and ensure that functionality and aesthetics are in harmony. So the placement is never done by the book, but always with great precision and a sense of the person behind it.

What is the recommended healing time and aftercare for these specific piercings?

Depending on the location, healing usually takes between three and six months. Proper care is especially important during the first few weeks: clean the area with a suitable piercing care product, avoid touching it unnecessarily, and be patient.

I continue to support my clients even after the piercing—to ensure everything heals properly and so we can address any issues that may arise.

Personal Assessment & Outlook:

Why do you think more and more people are becoming interested in this type of piercing?

Because many people are looking for a real alternative. A great many of the people who come to me no longer want to take pills—either because they experienced severe side effects or because they are seeking a more natural, holistic approach.

Acupuncture piercings can offer a gentle yet effective approach. For many people, they provide a welcome alternative way to address conditions such as migraines, stress, or allergies—without putting additional strain on the body.

Is this just a passing fad—or will it become a permanent part of piercing culture?

I am convinced that this type of piercing is here to stay. Of course, there are trends—but this goes deeper. It’s about health, mindfulness, and personal paths to a better life. Topics like body awareness, self-care, and alternative support are not just passing fads—they will become increasingly important in piercing culture.

What is particularly important to you personally when it comes to body image and piercings?

I hope that people will see their bodies not just as a shell, but as a partner. Piercings can be a way to reconnect with yourself, to be more mindful of your body—and to feel beautiful at the same time.

My goal is to support people who are seeking greater balance, inner peace, and a sense of well-being in their own bodies.
