From Pain to Strength: Tattoos as a Way to Redefine Scars!

Published: April 4, 2025, 12:13 p.m.

“Every disparaging glance, every hurtful comment felt like a stab to my soul—until I decided to replace that pain with the healing pricks of a tattoo and give my scars a new, powerful meaning.”

Trigger warning:
In this report, we discuss self-inflicted injuries (cuts) and their consequences.

Carla Idt has been on an inspiring journey. For a long time, she felt stared at and excluded because of her scars. Today, she wears those scars with pride—artfully transformed by stunning tattoos created by Didi Stöffler at Saint City Tattoo in St. Gallen. Her body now tells a new story of strength, self-confidence, and healing.

With the kind permission of Carla and Didi, we are able to share this special story and show that tattoos are much more than mere body art: they can heal emotional wounds, bring closure to difficult chapters, and give life a powerful new meaning.

Hi Carla, how did you come up with the idea of covering your scars with tattoos?
For years, I suffered from judgmental stares and negative comments because of my scars. After consulting with a scar clinic, I decided to look for an alternative due to cost concerns and uncertainty about the treatment’s success. Since I already had tattoos, I started looking for a tattoo artist with experience covering scars—and eventually found Didi. Right from our initial consultation, I knew immediately that this was the right path for me.

How have your self-image and people’s reactions changed?
People’s reactions have changed completely. These days, people no longer stare at me or look at me with pity; instead, I get positive comments about my tattoos. People now see me as a normal woman with tattooed arms. The scars are barely visible anymore, and sometimes I even forget what my body looks like underneath. I’m walking through life with confidence again and looking forward to summer.

What advice would you give to others in a similar situation?
You don’t have to just accept your scars—there are ways to deal with them and solutions available. While tattoos aren’t a substitute for therapy, they complement it perfectly. Today, I’m living a life I never would have thought possible before. I’m happily married and expecting my second child.

What do the chosen motifs mean to you?
Each motif has a personal connection to me: roses for my mother, my cat, a skull as a link to my father and brother, angels for positivity, and a gloomy castle for the darker chapters of my life. The compass stands for constant realignment; mountains and forests represent my home. It was important that the scars be covered with something beautiful and personal.

Didi is a fantastic tattoo artist; he knows his craft and takes a personalized approach with his clients. The time I spent in the studio with Didi and his wife really helped with the healing process.

Hi Didi, how did your collaboration with Carla come about?
Carla found me online. Funnily enough, it turned out later that I already knew her father—what a nice coincidence.

What are the challenges of tattooing over scars?
Tattooing over scars is particularly challenging. You have to work very carefully and delicately, as scar tissue is more sensitive and absorbs ink differently than healthy skin. While tattooing, I closely observe how the tissue reacts and constantly adjust my technique to avoid ink bleeding (so-called “blowouts”). That’s why I take extra time for scar tattoos.

Which designs are particularly suitable for scar cover-ups?
Large, shaded designs work best. Colorful tattoos are less suitable.

What does it mean to you to support people through this emotional process?
Scar coverage is a very personal and meaningful process. I help my clients let go of a heavy burden. This responsibility and the positive outcome mean a great deal to me.

Carla Idt's story powerfully illustrates how tattoos can transform scars into powerful symbols of strength and self-confidence. With the help of Didi Stöffler's skill and empathy, Carla was able to put a difficult chapter of her life behind her and create a new, positive self-image.

Tattoos can not only adorn the body, but also heal—both physically and emotionally. Carla’s courageous decision is meant to give others the strength to find their own path from darkness into the light.

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Carla and Didi for their openness and wish them all the best as they continue on their inspiring journey!
